Use this permit for the construction of new freestanding accessory structures or for modifications to existing structures (excluding detached garages). This includes arbors, trellises, pergolas, gazebos, greenhouses, or sheds that are not part of an active building permit.  

Addition

Addition to an existing building.

Alternate Power

Use this permit for the installation of solar (PV) systems, modifications to an existing system, as well as for geothermal or wind turbines installations.

Banner

A temporary sign to be displayed for up to 14 days.

Construction Hydrant Meter

This permit is to be used when private entities want to obtain water through a meter from a Village fire hydrant for construction purposes.

Deck

Construction of a new deck or alterations to an existing deck.

Demolition

Use this permit for any demolition work.

Detached Garage

This is a standalone permit for construction of a detached garage.

Drain Tile Sump Pump/Pit

This is a standalone permit for the installation or modification of interior drain tile, or sump pump, and/or sump pump discharge lines that is not linked to an active building permit.

Driveway

This permit is intended for driveway work, including replacing the existing driveway, widening or modifying it, and replacing, widening or modifying the apron.

Electrical

This is a standalone permit for all minor electrical work not tied to an active building permit or part of a larger project. Do not use this permit for Solar Power or Generators.

Elevator/Conveyance 

Use this permit for repairs to an existing elevator or the installation of a new elevator.

Exterior Alteration

Use this permit for any structural changes to the exterior surface (e.g., walls, new/enlarged window or door openings, or roof structure, such as rafters or trusses). This permit should not be used for replacing siding or roof coverings.

Exterior Drainage System

This is a standalone permit for the installation of a French drain, trench drain, storm drain, dry well, rain garden, or any modifications to drainage that is not linked to an active building permit.

Fence

Use this permit for the construction of a new fence or repairs to an existing fence.

Fire Alarm / Detection 

Use this permit to install a new fire detection system, modify an existing one, or perform work on a fire radio.

Fire Sprinklers

Use this permit work to install a new fire sprinkler system or to modify an existing one.

Generator

This is a standalone permit for all emergency or standby generator installations not tied to an active building permit.

HVAC

Installation of new mechanical systems or alterations to existing mechanical systems, including furnaces, air conditioners, chimney, fireplaces, boilers, or ductwork. This is a standalone permit for HVAC work not tied to an active building permit.

Interior Remodel

Interior improvements or alterations to an existing structure without increasing the existing building's floor or roof area.

Irrigation

Installation of a new lawn sprinkler system or modifications to an existing one.

New Building

Use this permit for new construction of a principal structure, including single-family homes, townhomes, apartments, or commercial buildings.

New/Upgrade Water Meter

This is a standalone permit for new or upgraded water meters that is not associated with an active building permit.

Outdoor Kitchen, Fire Pit, Fireplace

Outdoor Fire Pit, Oven, or Kitchen not associated with a larger project.

Parking Lot

Use this permit for resurfacing, patching, seal coating, restriping or making any modifications to an existing parking lot, as well as for the installation of a new parking lot.

Paved Surface

Use this application for all hard surfaces including patios, sports courts, stoops, walkways, and similar structures. Do not use this application for driveways.

Pool Spa Hot Tub

This is a standalone permit for the installation of a new pool, spa, or hot tub that is not associated with an active building permit.

Public Utility

Utility companies with Village franchise agreements (ComEd, Nicor, AT&T, Astound/WOW, Comcast, etc.) must obtain permits for installing, upgrading or replacing their facilities in the Village.

Radon Mitigation

Use this permit for the installation of a radon mitigation system or for modifications to an existing system.

Retaining Wall

This is a standalone permit for the construction of a retaining wall that is not associated with an active building permit.

Roofing and Gutters

This is a standalone permit for roof covering, gutters, soffits, or fascia that is not associated with an active building permit.

Siding/Tuckpointing

This is a standalone permit for siding or tuckpointing that is not associated with an active building permit.

Signs, Canopy, Awning 

Installation of a new sign or alterations to an existing sign, canopy, or awning.

Site Development

Use this permit for site work that involves 1,500 square feet or more of land disturbing activities or work in special management areas (floodplain, wetlands, or buffers) that is not linked to an active building permit.

Telecommunication Sites

Use this permit for all work on cellular communications systems.

Temporary Structure

Use this permit for temporary tents, bleachers, or other temporary structures.

Water / Sewer

Use this permit for any new connection or work to repair an existing water, sewer, or storm line.

Water Heater Replacement

This is a standalone permit for water heater replacement not tied to an active building permit.

Business

Licenses are required for all businesses operating in the Village of Glen Ellyn.

Commercial Filming

Commercial or non-residential productions require approval of a permit.

Food & Beverage Monthly Tax

Food and Beverage Tax Monthly Returns and payment must be filed monthly and are due the 20th of the following month for which the tax was collected.

Food & Beverage Tax Registration

This tax applies to businesses that make retail sales of food and beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) prepared for immediate consumption on and/or off the premises of prepared food facilities and includes drive through and carry-out sales. The tax also applies to packaged liquor purchased at retail. Every business that conducts retails sales of these items must register as a retailer prior to opening.

Food Truck

All food trucks that are not part of an approved Special Event Permit require an annual license.

Indoor Live Entertainment

Indoor live entertainment may be permitted in businesses and restaurants in the C2, C3, C4, C5A, C5B and C6 zoning districts, provided that a permit is obtained from the Village.

Liquor

The Village of Glen Ellyn requires businesses to apply for and receive approval from the Village Board to sell or serve liquor at their establishments or special events.

Massage

Massage establishments require an annual license from the Village of Glen Ellyn to operate.

Outdoor Café License Agreement

A license is required to place tables and chairs in the public right-of-way.

Outdoor Live Entertainment

Outdoor live entertainment may be permitted in businesses and restaurants in the C2, C3, C4, C5A, C5B and C6 zoning districts, provided that a permit is obtained from the Village.

Raffle

Organizations wishing to conduct a raffle within Glen Ellyn are required to apply for a Raffle License.

Real Estate Transfer Tax Stamp

To file the transfer of a deed with DuPage County, a Village of Glen Ellyn Real Estate Transfer Stamp is required. The tax rate is $3 for each $1,000 of property sales price and must be paid by the home seller.

Special Event

Non-residential public events require a Special Event Permit.

Temporary Dining Platform License Agreement

A license is required to allow a temporary dining platform to be placed all or in part on the public roadway and all or in part on the public sidewalk.

Vendor Cart License Agreement
